Experience a beautiful part of Maui by horseback. Guided trail rides through Maui's unspoiled Paniolo country around Kaupo and the Gap trail into Haleakala crater. All trips are offered daily. Overnight pack trips into Haleakala Crater are also offered. Both day and overnight trips offer riders an unique experience in one of Hawaii's most picturesque and historic areas.
- Guided Day Trips
- Hourly Guided trail rides through the lovely Kaupo area are offered. The cost is $100.00 per person and the rides last a minimum of 3 hours. A light lunch is included. Trips begin in Kaupo 10 miles west of Oheo Park, up the slopes of Haleakala's Kaupo Gap as far as Haleakala Crater depending on conditions. Other rides through Kaupo and Nuu areas can be arranged. Call us for more details. Trips are offered for 4 to 6 people per group.
- Guided Overnight Trips
- All overnight crater trips begin at Kaupo with overnight stay in the National Park campgrounds or cabins in the crater (if available).
These trips return to Kaupo the next afternoon. Meals are provided from lunch through lunch. Group size is limited to two to six persons.
This ride takes you from Kaupo up the gap trail through cool Koa forests into Haleakala crater. Along the way and while in the crater you will see many historical points of interest like the Bottomless Pit Ke ana wili nau, Panini Cave, as well as native plants like the Maui Silversword, Nene Geese, and an endless amount of photo opportunities of the incredible views. Travelling the Kaupo Gap Trail by horseback offers a rare and unique way of experiencing this part of Maui. Let the horses do the work while you enjoy traveling through a part of Maui that is timeless and full of natural beauty. Please note that it is very important to book the overnight trips as far in advance as possible (12 weeks or more) if you want to stay in the park cabins.
Overnight Trip Rates For Parties of 4 to 6 are as Follows:
- $300 per person, per night which INCLUDES FOOD and cabin fees, if cabin is used, OR camping equipment (such as sleeping bags, tents, etc.) if campsite is used.
- $250 per person, per night which DOES NOT INCLUDE FOOD. You will have to provide and cook you own food. includes cabin fees if cabin is used, OR camping equipment (such as sleeping bags, tents, etc.) if campsite is used.
Overnight Trip Rates For Parties of 2 to 3 are as Follows:
- $350 per person, per night which INCLUDES FOOD. I will also furnish the cabin fees if using the cabin, if using the campsite I will also furnish the camping equipment.
- where to meet
- All trails rides begin at Charley's residence at Kaupo. Please see the map link below for general directions to Charley's house. Feel free to call us for more detailed directions.Day trail rides starting times are arranged on an individual basis. Crater trips begin at 9:00am.
- Transportation
- All persons are responsible for their own transportation to and from Charley's residence.
- clothing & equipment
- A hat, warm clothing, rain ponchos and boots are recommended for all rides, particularly the crater trips. You should include personal toiletries and one change of clothes for overnight trips. Remember it can get chilly at night in the crater especially during winter months. Of Course, don't forget the camera and lots of film as you will experience natural Hawaiian beauty and incredible vistas found nowhere else in Hawaii.

- We dont have E Mail out here "yet" but please give us a call at (808) 248-8209 for more information about the rides or to make a resevation.
Please keep in mind that early reservations are required, at least 3 months for best chance to reserve a cabin in the National Park. If you want to stay in the park camp grounds or are interested in just a day ride around beautiful Kaupo, you dont need to book as far in advance. A 50% is required in advance for all trips into the crater. Sorry we do not accept personal checks or credit cards. Please make your money order or cashier's check payable to: Charles Aki Jr. I will return your deposit in the event of illness (or other valid reasons) provided you give me 14 days notice prior to arrival. In case of bad weather in Kaupo or Haleakala crater the day of the ride and it is determined that is would be best to cancel I will refund your deposit.THERE WILL BE NO REFUND FOR ANY OTHER REASONS. Final payment due upon arrival at Charley's residence.
